Viennese Secession
started in: 1897

The creation of the Vienna Secession in 1897 heralded the official start of modern art in Austria, a country known for its adherence to a strict conservative tradition at the time. It was the emergence of the first movement of artists and designers dedicated to a forward-thinking, internationalist view of the art world, one that was all-encompassing in its embrace and integration of genres and fields(The Art Story, 2017b)

TITLE: Aureol(1898)
ARTIST:Josef Maria Auchentaller
Date accessed: 09/06/22

Auchentaller entered the Secession at its start, but separated with the organization in 1905 over the quest for a gallery space as one of Gustav Klimt's followers. This poster, from the year the Secession Building was constructed, reveals how Secessionists displayed linkages with foreign artists from the start, in this case, the Art Nouveau images that were sweeping Europe at the time.(The Art Story)

TITLE: Beethoven Frieze (1902)
ARTIST:Gustave klimt
Date accessed:09/06/22

Gustav Klimt painted the Beethoven Frieze, of which only a detail is visible here, for the 14th Secession exhibition in 1902, possibly the group's most famous, devoted to the eponymous German composer who lived in Vienna for a long time. It's a massive piece that stands 7 feet tall by 112 feet long and weighs 4 tons. It was painted on the inside walls of the Secession Building and was kept but not displayed again until 1986, when it was moved to the basement and is now permanently on display.(The Art Story)
